Expiry of medicine in public health facilities of Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia: a quantitative and qualitative study

Abstract Medicines are one of the critical elements a well-functioning healthcare system, but their expiry remains significant challenges in sector. This study aims assessing extent issue and identifying expired medicine types underlying causes some selected public health facilities Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. is mixed-method, which includes both quantitative qualitative components. The research was undertaken by retrospective data extraction recorded medicines as for specified period. At same time, part facility-based cross-sectional survey with self-administered questionnaires semi-structured in-depth interviews engaging professionals to explore reasons expiration medicines. Fifteen were from zone. total monetary value studied during 2017-2019 185,938.86 USD. In period, all received worth 2,425,882.64 USD, resulting an rate 7.66%. top classes wasted through terms anti-infectives (35.51%) central nervous system (CNS) disorders (20.48%). comparison, dosage forms, nearly half solid forms (48.81%), followed liquid (41.82%). Delivery near date Ethiopia’s Pharmaceuticals Supply Agency (PSA), lack exchange between facilities, presence overstocked due improper forecasting need common perceived factors contributing Thus, Policymakers should make decisions reduce wastage promote appropriate utilization finite resources.
